When winter weather hits, you don’t want to be stranded in the cold with a vehicle that won’t start or has gone off the road. By preparing it for the cooler temps in the fall, you’ll do yourself a great service.

Keep reading to learn what you can do to get ready for winter driving.

Winter Weather Checklist

Open the hood and take a look at the necessary fluids that keep your vehicle running in top shape. If an oil change is in order, consider asking for a winter-grade oil that’s slightly thinner to help improve performance. Replacing the coolant in your vehicle for a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water will also help keep your engine components from freezing in low temperatures.

Checking all of your brake components from the fluid to the rotors and pads is crucial to ensuring you have stopping power when the roads are covered in ice or slush. Inspect the rotors for warping, cracking, or deep grooves, and see if your brake pads are significantly worn down. If any of these are present, consider getting them replaced.

Speaking of stopping power, tires with proper tread provide you with the traction you need to drive through slick conditions and come to a safe stop. Inspect the tread of your tires by inserting a penny into the tread with Abraham Lincoln’s head aimed toward the tread. If you see all of Abe’s head, the tire needs to be replaced.

Emergency Kit

As an added safety measure, pack an emergency kit in your trunk. The kit should include items that will help you get free if your vehicle becomes stuck, or protect you while waiting for roadside assistance to arrive.

Your emergency kit can include:

  • Blanket
  • Flashlight
  • Jumper cables
  • Road flares
  • First-aid kit
  • Snacks
  • Gloves
  • Bag of sand or kitty litter (for added traction)
